Greetings from the North Bay area.

My friend and I are heading out Monday (weather permitting) for a lake stocked with rainbow trout. I haven't fished for them before and figured I asked for some tips.

I'm going to try sparky302s tip: single gold hoke with a worm for still fishing or trolling it with a mepps comet #3 red and white blade. I'm going to change the treble hook to a single gold hook. Other then that, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know friends of mine who fish rainbows through the ice with small cocktail shrimp on a hook.
I do well with spawn bags myself.

Cocktail shrimp! WOW. Wouldn't have thought of that 😂.

I second the shrimp also along with roe bags

Wet fly with a tiny piece of worm on it, let out a bunch of line and quietly drift.

Any specific fly? This are my weapons of choice...hope they work.

I use shrimp or a wet fly in the winter. Shrimp typically close to bottom and a wet fly would be 2 ft or so from bottom of the ice. Good luck!

Thanks folks for you tips. Heading out tomorrow morning around 8am. I'll let you know how I make out. I also talked to the biologist who looks after the area I'm going and he said he never gets any feedback on the lakes they stock so, I call him too.

Cheers.

Well, spent four hours today checking out a lake I have never been on. Apparently it's was stocked with 1500 rainbow trout last fall. So, after trolling, still fishing, drifting casting and trying all the tips I received from everyone, all we came up with was two bass. Marked a number of fish at different depths, 7 through to 30'. Deepest part was 39'. I guess I will have to give it a go during the hard water season.

Second and last bass. They also had black spots in their mouths and on their tails.

The black spots are a parasite. Unsightly when they are so many but quite harmless when cooked properly, as all freshwater fish should be.

Glad you caught something.

I once went for Splake in the winter to a lake stocked with 5000 per year for several years straight. I was ice fishing with a buddy. We made swish cheese of the lake and caught nothing all day. I then told another friend and he mentioned he and his two friends went to the same lake several times and got skunked.
I personally don’t hold stocking numbers in great regard when researching a lake.

I'm starting to think the same thing. This is the third stocked lake I've fished this summer and no luck so far. I'll try them again in the winter and if they don't produce maybe it's time to move on to different lakea and species. I do well with bass, walleye and pike but not so well with trout.

Still have a lot to learn I guess.

You ever wonder if a highly stocked lake is there simply to distract attention from some other nearby good or fragile natural fishery?

Posted by: Backroadsfishing Oct 30, 2021 - 03:29 pm
I thought that too. I contacted the MNRs biology officer prior to going out to ask some questions about the lake. He said it was their first time to stock it (fall 2020) with rainbows and has had no feedback yet.

He did mention that if they hear of very few rainbows being caught because of the bass then they will stop stocking the lake.

So...according to him, they should be there. I just can't catch them... laugh.gif Maybe I'll have better luck this winter.
