Wow a horrible story for your friend for sure. Atleast when I fell in it wasn't as cold. I've been out there when it's that cold and man... nothing can warm u up when u get wet.

Scary at the time, HILARIOUS since. just the way he stood up out of his chair, turned around and put his foot right through. then same foot down the other holes we fished 20 mins before. I certainly wouldn't want that to happen.

Last year on Wolseley Bay in October for a muskies Canada outing, one new member had a wet release. went to release his first muskie, leaned a bit too far over and splash, he was swimming with the fish when the air temps were no warmer than 5c. did not know it had happened until that night when his partner was showing the release pics. luckily he wasn't more than 5 minutes away from the lodge and had dry clothes to go back to.

last summer, I was fishing with my sister's bf, throwing small muskie lures (8s/9s) for big pike, and I felt a thud against the side of my head. then a hard tug with a sharp pain. within seconds the whole right side of my head from my nose right around to the back of my neck, and my t-shirt were red with blood. he hooked his biggest catch of his life before the lure hit the water. im standing there, blood dripping down the side of my face, dripping off my eyebrows onto the seat below me and the floor, with a muskie lure sticking out the side of my head. good thing it didn't go past the barb. he just goes "OH S*** are you ok!? I AM SOOO SORRY!!!" and without warning rips it out of my head. the 10 minute ride back, he keeps looking over his shoulder for 2 reasons, 1. that I was ok and wasn't going to feint. and two, that I didn't kill him and dump his body haha. He asks me if I wanna go to the hospital, and if im ok, or if im feeling woozy. I look at him and say "1. Im ok, lets just get back to the cottage so I can get cleaned up 2. im not p##### and im not gunna kill you, it was an accident. 3. No you cannot get a mount of me even though im the biggest living animal or being you will catch in your life, and I get that im a trophy catch. 4. lets get back, im good, I needed a beer anyway." we pull up to the dock and my mom is sitting there reading. she sees us coming in way to fast and watched us with a concerned look on her face. then I turned my head to grab the rope and she screamed! WHAT HAPPENED!!! "he got the catch of a lifetime"

This was a good excuse for a shower beer though. He did hide from me and kept offering to grab me anything I wanted and I said to my sister "tell him im not mad at him. it was an accident and it happens. its not the first time ive been hooked and probably wont be the last." Luckily it didn't go past the barb otherwise he would have needed to push the hook further in and back through the skin to cut it off so he could pull it back through.

The next time I fished with him was the Balsam Beauty last year and I brought a second bag for a specific reason. when we hopped in his buddies boat, I jumped back out ran to the truck grabbed my Lacrosse goalie helmet, threw it on and said, OK im ready to fish with him now. his buddy died of laughter. he gave an "oh **** off" half laugh reaction. "you aren't going to let that one go are you?" Me: haha, it is my right

Mine starts same as other, put plug in wrong hole, fits perfect. Launch get 1/2 mile from ramp see water coming over floor. Turn bilge on and head back through town. Put boat on trailer drain, put plug back in re-launch. Fish several spots no fish. Heading to new spot engine just dies, never before done that. Look back she's on fire. Grab fire extinguisher and put out. Now dead in water. Big A$$ speed boat comes by offers a tow. gives me 20ft rope, I have 100ft but he not hearing any of that, 20ft good. He takes off, has me plain out going so fast. Have no idea how we going to stop with out hitting. He cuts power, I'm heading to hit the back of his boat. His GF goes to stick out foot to stop me, I yell at her not to do that, my boat goes to side for the miss. I cut rope and coast to the dock. End of day of fishing. Also this was all done to my boat that I had already traded in for my current boat, so not even mine really. So many things could have gone wrong, lucky in the end,.

A buddy I used to work with stopped in today to visit the old gang today, while he was down we chatted about old times and he brought up a story I forgot or at least try to. A few years back we decided to go ice fishing at the cabin in early march, it was a very warm march and almost no snow in my area only being an hour away I'm like I'm going to drive in to the cabin. The cabin is on a forest access road which is a road not owned by the municipality so they don't have to maintain it like a logging road pretty much. That Saturday obviously had to be like -28 or -30, my buddies text me the night before and are like we're going to run a little late we'll drive up and meet you there.

So the next morning I'm driving along the road I get to the "winter maintenance ends here sign" I get out of the truck check the snow it doesn't look much deeper and if I drive in it saves a 3 mile walk. So I drive in the road doubles as a snowmobile trail in the winter. i drive down the road everything is going fine I decide to just turn into the lane way into the cabin in case an odd snowmobiler wants to use the road. As soon as I get off the road the front axle just gets buried my old chevy had 33's and a 2 inch lift so it was high (not as high as the snow though) Try hitting reverse nope running back and forth I'm stuck.

So I panic I guess I'm not thinking rationally and get tunnel vision. I get out of the truck and I'm going to walk to the cabin grab a shovel and dig myself out. I forgot to grab my pack, coat gloves won't need that in -28 weather. The 300 yard lane way usually takes 5 minutes in the summer. The snow is pretty much waist deep took me about 15 minutes to cover 200 yards. Last 100 yards I hear it...branches breaking, When it gets this cold everything in the forest becomes brittle. I know it's not squirrels I know it's something big. Instantly I'm thinking black bear ran out of food I'm done, black bear sightings there being semi frequent so my fears aren't ungrounded and had a terrifying experience with one a couple years prior maybe 2 miles away. Didn't bring my pack no lighter no buck knife. I'm looking for sticks... nothing everything is covered in 3 feet of snow. I know I can't outrun it going a mile an hour so I just start yelling and making noise and slowly moving forward.......turned out to be a bunch of elk eating from a tree next to the woodshed.

So I get to the woodshed grab the only thing I do have on me my keys, unlock the padlock, wouldn't you know it damn door is iced in I go into beast mode and beat the crap out of it damage it horribly manage to get it open enough to grab a spade and an axe cut my hands up pretty bad prying the 2x6 wooden door open. The axe had no practical uses but given the previous couple minutes wandering around in the forest with an axe seemed like the best thing to do. I get about 100 yards back up to the lane way the adrenaline dumps. Carrying the axe and shovel my fingers are icing up bad, it's no longer 200 yards to the truck it's 5 more feet, 5 more feet. I managed to get back to the truck any other slip up like leaving truck keys int he padlock or dropping them and to this day not a doubt in my mind my stupidity would have cost me my life.

Get to the truck crank the heat put fingers in my mouth and breathe a sigh of relief. After I grab my gloves and coat I start digging out the tires. As I'm digging out the tires I hit a tire with the shovel and it spins...... I'm not stuck the frame of the truck is sitting on snow, managed to get the truck off the snow turned around fished for an hour and drove home, never drove past the no winter maintenance sign again in winter. When bad things happen I try to think a lot more rationally. Probably the worst day for fishing, I've had bad things happen but that was a bunch of stupid decisions on my part that added up to a bad time.

Yup that would suck.

And when it's cold it makes everything so much worse
