We got back from our annual moose hunt.We left on Sept 17 and return ned on the 27th. We got there and put canoes into two different lakes on our fist night. My hunting partner saw two bulls on the third day and heard a cow on the fourth day. There was little movement because of the 25 degree temps but we kept hunting and fishing.
We saw a caribou swim across our lake and also watched a wolverine work its way down our shoreline looking for something to eat. That is themost fascinating animal Ive seen in a long time and the only one Ive ever seen.
On day seven I walked two kilometers in to a new lake. As I was looking for a spot to set up I loked over my shoulder and a bull was standing in the far west end of the lake. At 323 yards he was in range of my 270 so I steadied up and shot. He jumped about three jumps and stood ther and I put one through the front shoulders and he pitched forward. Moose down!!
Be ause of the heat I immediately gutted and skinned him off o start the cooling process. I went back to camp and got my partner and the wheeler. When we got back we could drive the wheeler right to it. We quartered it and hauled it back to camp. We left the next morning and dry iced the quarters and headed for home. 24 hours later we brought the moose to the butcher and it was nicely chilled. When we got the meatback there was 340 pounds cut and wrapped. Looks like we are set for winter!!
During the trip we pickerel fished most days for an hour or two between hunts. No one else fishes these lakes and we would catch 15 -20 each day. Most were between 16-22 inches. Between fish and thre kinds of birds(ruffed, spruce, and sharp tailed grouse) we ate well and didnt eat any of the meat we brought along. Another great moose hunt!
