Went up for our annual trip up in the Temagami region this past Friday to Sunday. Smaller lake part of a chain of connected lakes. We set up in a small bay, depths ranging from 27'-42'. Lake trout are closed in the zone until February 15th so we avoided fishing deeper than 42', whitefish were our main target species.
During the day, cisco were active throughout the column and a few were even caught on bottom.
Loading up on cisco for the smoker:
From dusk to sundown we moved shallower (25'-27') searching for walleye and to our surprise ended up catching more whitefish from 6:30pm-7:30pm.
The activity was inconsistent much like the weather (0 degrees Saturday morning plummeting to nearly -30 by the end of the day) with the prime window generally being from 9am-2pm.
A whitefish (missing half of its caudal fin) I caught Sunday morning on a dropshot rig with a live pearl dace a few inches off bottom, a fly tied on a few inches above that:
Few more whitefish from the last morning:
In total we landed 10 whitefish and 10 cisco. Not the highest numbers we've had on this particular lake but decent given the unstable weather.
