Smelts have small little teeth. They bite and the yarn tangles in their mouth.

Yarn didn’t work so well. 58 FOW too much for them to hang on. But the single trout egg hooks did the trick. Caught about 16 to add to my 4 the other day. I can eat now!

Sorry for the wrong date in the snow. I thought today was the 29th.

I scratched that itch. Thank you Mother Nature for the safe ice!

Took me longer to clean these than perch. Not sure how back in the days my family cleaned a bushel full.

30+ years since I had a batch of fried smelts from this lake. Wow are they sweet! Hands down best eating fish coming out of Simcoe!

oh great memories, my 1st time ice fishing Simcoe was for smelts, man that was over 30 years ago. As the new guy my friends dad tricked me into biting the head off one raw, he said it was a tradition when you catch your 1st smelt.... my son caught one last weekend close to long shole, i assumed it was a small herring but now looking at the pictures i can see it was a smelt.
