Two anglers stranded on an island in the north channel of north Georgian Bay have been rescued.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre at CFB Trenton says the man and woman set out from Kagawong marina on Manitoulin Island in a five-metre boat to go fishing about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

They didn't return as expected several hours later.

A C-130 Hercules from Trenton's 424 Search and Rescue Squadron was dispatched overnight, along with a provincial police vessel.

The two were spotted early this morning standing along the shore of Clapperton Island, where their boat had run aground.

They were taken by police back to their home in Kagawong.
