Thanks for that. I wondered if maybe they were strung out like that to go into a big smoker of some kind. That said, any of the folks that I knew who were smoking their catch back in the day didn't have smokers near big enough for that rack. I didn't really think of sun drying, didn't know anyone who did that but that doesn't mean it wasn't done. Aren't there too many preditors in these parts for that?
hey great pic we called that a flake back east..cod was salted for a few days/weeks and then put in the sun to be cured..spent many days putting the fish out to dry and bringing them back in at sun down or rain moving in..
yes throah guy we mostly layed them flat but when we were drying your drying 10.000 lbs plus you would have to hang them as well.some were like a cloths line some you layed them flat on flake and also hung them all around the base of the flake..long gone are those days..

I wondered about the reel myself. There's some pretty old stuff tucked away here and there on the Island but nothing like that as far as I know. The rod does look store bought though.

John, interesting thought but I can't visualize it. Here's an aerial photo of Eagle Point from 1927. Most of the buildings from those two farms are still there. Back then, they ran sheep on South Point so it was pretty bare. Since we have a one pic per message rule I'll put South Point in another post. The original pics are from a cottage on the other side of the Island but they were related to the people in the northerly farm of the two so it is certainly possible.
