well i just assumed that the old engines like higher octane. my 50 year old car wouldn't even run on regular gas back in the 70's. so it has gotten high high test and stabilizer all its life. don't know if it helps in my small engines but they start and run every time i use them, so right or wrong I'm not going to change now. i'm old like most of my engines and i don't like change either.
Yup I have 38 small engines that run my property Maintenance business and they all get put into storage with stabiliser added. Never a startup issue.

Just an fyi to you all.
You should ran stabilizer all year round in your boats. Most boat gas sits for long periods of time and experiences phase break down causing varnishes and to separate and build up on your parts. Most users can fill a tank of gas and may not fill up again for weeks on end if not months end. This is the cheapest possible insurance to make sure your boat always runs well. A big bottle of fuel stabilizer from Canadian tire will run about 15 bucks for the entire season if not a couple of seasons.

My 2022 atv rubicon if run whit high teck gas will back fire use regular have no problem.
Makes complete sense.
High octane takes high pressure/high heat to properly ignite. If your engine is not designed to run on high octane you get zero benefits from running high octane now that all out gas has ethanol added. You may even get worse fuel mileage IF your engine doesn’t combust high octane properly.

Or be like me and do nothing. I only make sure there is no water in the lower unit to prevent freeze-up damage, that's it. I run a 1991 Suzuki and had no problems whatsoever over the years. Every spring my engine starts and runs just fine with no stabilizer added to the fuel and whether the tank is full, half or empty. I also top-up my lead acid battery once a month. This is my experience, and yours may vary.

Probably using a oil mix that includes stabiliser.

I was told to, and always have, run high octane in 2strokes. In my experience it makes them run smoother, and when I was riding a dirt bike the performance increase was noticeable when running the highest possible octane.
For 4 strokes, usually just regular, but in my Yami Bolt running high octane solved mild pinging in engine.
As for storage, seafoam/stabilizer, run it through, starve the engine, put it away.... never fails.
