I am looking to buy a VHF hand held....what brand name and model are you using and what do you like about it's features keeping Kayaking in mind? Thanks for your experience members. I am leaning towards this one.

I have (and carry with me at all times while on kayak) a Standard Horizon HX890 VHF radio with some features you won't see on cheaper models:

* GPS
* NOAA Weather channels
* DSC calling
* FM radio (I can listen to music or news while fishing:-)
* Built-in scrambler system (eg, for one-to-one secure/secret communication)
* Waterproof and floats on water
* Water-activated emergency WHITE strobe light
* Made in JAPAN

IMHO this model is currently among the best hand-held VHF radio.

I have had mine for around 3 years now with zero issues. Previously I had its earlier model HX870 which is literally the same as this HX890 but sans FM radio receiver and voice scrambler system.

Right now amazon is selling this HX890 for $359:

https://www.amazon.ca/Standard-Horizon-HX89...cs%2C173&sr=1-3

But Radio World in Toronto is selling it for $90 cheaper at $269 (about the same price as the one you are looking at):

https://www.radioworld.ca/sta-hx890

DISCLAIMER: I am not associated with Standard Horizon whatsoever, financially, romantically or otherwise. I am just a very satisfied customer of this HX890 VHF radio:-)

Thanks James....I was hoping you would chime in because I know you do good research and know you carried one. I respect your opinion as you have helped so many members on here with your information including myself.

Sorry for late reply.
I have a ICOM 92D, good unit, bought from RadioWorld in sale many years ago.
Still running like a champ.
I use it mostly on lake Erie when I go with the kayak far from shore.
Tight lines and be safe.

ICOM 92D
