Does anyone have experience with taking an inboard/outboard engine out of an aluminum boat then putting it back in after the transom is rebuilt? Also removing a 9.9 kicker.
It's a Mercruiser 5.0 L in a Lund Tyee 1950.
A shop quoted me about 50 hours. Does that sound right?

I can tell you that I once bought a boat knowing that the engine might have not been winterized properly. Saturday morning first ride proved tthat to be true. Pulled boat out and started taking apart, had the engine out by 1pm. This was a 4.3l but very similar to your 5.0l. Before i pulled it my Dad went searching an found a good used close by and we started putting it in aound 2-3pm. After a few evening beers we were out testing it in the morning. Mind you, I do have a backhoe that helped to pull the engine outdoors. I would say within 12hrs ,total old one out, replacement in. I have pulled installed my share of I\O's though.

I have seen many io engines pulled out and reinstalled 454.s for example
average time for both operations was about 16 hours with the reinstall taking longer as the engine has to be level and connected back to main shaft has to be within specific tolerances

About seven years ago my wife and I travelled to Port Perry to begin a trip to go up the Trent system. Needless to say we experienced mechanical problem within the hour from leaving the Port Perry marina. It was I think a compression plate which needed to be replaced which entailed removing the motor from the boat. Parts were purchased and the next morning the owner of Port Perry Marina and his mechanic started at 8:00 am and by 1:00 that afternoon boat was back in the water going for a test run. Everything done to a tee, gimbal bearing greased and centre alignment completed while the out drive was off. The boat has run perfect ever since So not sure why when I'm reading that estimates are for more than 20 hours and as high as 50 to do your job. Before I had the marina at Port Perry do the work I called Maple City Marine in Chatham where I get all my service work done normally to get an approximate quote and they were nearly identical to the Port Perry Marina quote. I think I would be asking some serious questions.
