Had a blast slamming Haliburton Golds today in the wind! Launched by 8am, 2 man limit by 9:45am, 10 lakers by 11:45, off the water by 12pm. I fished with vibrato, my friend fished with a tungsten jig with a chunk of smelt on it. We both did equally as well with nonstop fish coming through in all the spots we tried. Couldn’t find a whitefish or burbot or Brookie. Fished 40-50fow. Most fish near bottom with a suspended. All cookie cutter size and meat was amazing. Most fish don’t grow very big here, although there are 20lbers lurking. Waves were getting crazy by noon. 50km gusts and ice pellets and hard snow.

Now those size of lakers, I would consider eating too. A clarification. You said that you fishing buddy used a piece of smelt. What kind of piece? Also, I was always told that no smelt (dead or alive could be used as bait - I have never dived into this too deeply since there are other baits that can be used but always thought they would make good bait ...because the fish are eating them). Clearly, your buddy thinks it's legal to use a piece. Do you know for sure using a piece is legal? I am curious just in case, in the future I hit the smelt run up here then I can can keep pieces (like heads and eyeballs) from cleaning them to use as bait. I hate having to toss things that can be used, esp., if they are good bait.

Out of curiosity what colour vibrato was working for you if you dont mind me asking?

From the grocery store. Used as cut bait. Also delicious.
