4 Sleeps!, Until Bass season

Well, the season starts early this year with June 1st being a Saturday. I can see in my bay that the Bass have moved away from spawning areas which is good news and likely due to the early warm Spring back in March, April. What's Everyone got planned?

I am going to head out early Saturday and look for the Smallies first in an area that usually produces. As it gets later in the morning I will likely work my way back home tossing spinbaits and swimbaits for Largies.

Yes opener is early this year. I have also noticed most if not all the bass have moved off the nests which is great. I will be out on Balsam for bass during the day and evening for walleye. The weather looks good. Last weekend was a disaster for me lots of wind and waves and the low pressure didn’t help. There is a bass tournament but it is a big body of water so will barely notice the extra traffic. Good luck

Sigh....a week and a half to go in Zone 14......but I will be ready on June 22 in the Kayak targeting one of my favourite species.

I’m headed east to Zone 20 on Lake O. Strange that Lmb opens but smallies are not until 1st Sat. In July.

There are also pickerel, perch and pike where we’re going.

Has been already getting big largies in 3-5 lb range on Couch while fishing for pike on swim baits , so had to change spots or fish deeper to avoid them .

I believe the reason for the smallmouth delay is smallies spawn later in the spring. I seem to remember the water temps are around high 60s. In Lake O (and Lake Simcoe), the smallies are often still on beds in June.

I kept it simple...drop shotting for smallmouth and frogging / flipping jig for largies.

It was a chilly morning, but the fish cooperated.

The fishing has been good, I have been releasing everything and just enjoying being out.
My neighbour kept his limit and brought some fillets over so I got the best of both worlds.
Catch and release then a fish fry without having to fillet them.
This is 2 Bass done in a beer batter and fried in a cast iron pan on the BBQ.
