Thanks for the intel...upgrade from my x67c works but goes wonky sometimes...I think it's the transducer going... it's served me well.

...and unfortunately, that's an expensive part to replace. I can't believe that for this unit, buying the same ice transducer separately will cost over $100 already!

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a Lowrance unit - and at that price, it's an even better deal.

I have always used Lowrance products - and still have and use my x67c. I didn't realize that the Hook series had mapping capabilities - so that would be an added bonus.

Enjoy - this cold weather sure gets the blood pumping for some hardwater action!

Just discovered there is a small micro SD card slot at the bottom of the unit so I guess you can buy and install much more detailed maps than the really coarse base map they have in it already.

That's correct. Hook 5 (without that "dreaded" 'X':-) has MicroSD card slot.

It is those models with 'X' such as Hook 4X, Hook 5X, etc that have no such MicroSD card slot.

Thanks Flukes for the heads-up on this deal. I'm running a Livescope as my main unit, but the deal was too good to pass up so I ordered one as a backup or just a loaner to anyone that I take out with me

A nice low priced unit!
I’m really outdated, as I’m still using a very old Lowrance Eagle Strata 128 portable that runs off 8 D-cell batteries. I’ve had it for ages, but it still works, so don’t see the need to update yet.
I’ve always used Lowrance…the first was a paper graph recorder.
My latest is a Hook 7 in my kayak.

Just received my unit today. I chose the cheapest option which was Canada Post and it shipped in 2 days. Everything is as it should be and the fact that there’s a transducer and battery with charger and all cables is amazing for that price. Bring in the hard water so I can put this unit to the test. Can’t wait ?

I didn't know about the "X". I had a look at a Hook 2 4X at CT while looking around for an inexpensive sonar. I didn't like that at all. Even the transducer was very cheap and it was about $220 (with the GPS plotter). This Hook4 Ice Machine was an amazing deal and just the right time for me to "upgrade" from black and white (not that I had any issues with them but at this price, it felt like the time was right to change).

I was thinking about getting a second one just for the same purpose (i.e., if I had non-serious fishing friends wanting to fish with me but then thought, why am I paying for their enjoyment ). My old black-white units should be plenty good for what they would be doing anyway or if they were good friends, they can use the new one and I can easily use the old black/white ones.

I've used mine twice already (with an older 7 pin skimmer transducer) and so far, so good. I like the fact, I didn't have to buy another transducer to be able to use it (although some of the features are not available with the older skimmer transducer, the basic sonar is there and good enough for my kind of fishing...and it seems to be good enough for me to catch fish at about the same rate as with my old black and white units).

I still have an Eagle Magna III that still works well (I had replaced the transducer with an Airmar (?) one about 20 years ago and have had no problems with it. I also have an Eagle SeaFinder 320 - was a really good then and is still working without any issues. Both came with the plastic portable box (and with suction cup transducer mount that never worked too well) and the 8-D cell battery pack (which you don't have to use - just replace it with the gel cell 12V 7-8A rechargeable batteries) for ice fishing or canoe fishing, etc. I am sure they would drive some of the members crazy trying to use them but if you know what you are looking at on the screen, they work very well.
