I hesitated adding anything here, not wanting to appear critical of a well presented construction project. Having had a smitty for few years now, I changed the length of the cross-members to give the sleigh a wider stance in deeper snow. Anyone that has owned/dragged a narrow toboggan (eg Pelican Trek = 20" wide) in deeper snow probably cursed it as it tips over following in the tracks you make in the snow while pulling it. If you make the smitty 35", 38", 40",...(?) wide, your skis will run outside your foot prints in the snow and ride along more smoothly without tipping over. They are a simple and great piece of equipment. Good fishing!

I agree totally with Wilbur007 that wider is better.
Also made my Smitty Sled wider and put the Tub on one side and
then put my 6 Man Pop Up beside the Tub with my Auger on top
of that.
I have 3 uprights and 3 cross members and a 48 quart cooler fits on
there too......Cooler keeps the important things dry.

why is it called a Smitty Sled?

Any idea where the name came from?

With all the variances on the general theme - must be some interesting history?

Apparently it's named after the guy who first built an elevated platform on top of a pair of skis. I think that was at least ten years ago; I'm not good with dates.

I made my smitty so I can break it down and put it in my little car.

Also, made it wide enough fopr my pelican sled and my pop up beside it rather than piling it too high.

It is the best thing I have even done for my ice fishing, I can carry a real payload on it. When it is crisp like now it like slides under wind pressure...lol
