Howdy,

I missed yesterday and went out this morning after work. I had a real, real hard time using the float reel....to the point where I almost through the whole darn thing, rod and reel in the water....

Now what the heck is the secret to using a float reel?? I thought I would have done better, especially after fly fishing previously!! Line here, wrapped up here, stuck at the top etc....very frustrating morning. Luckily there was nobody within sight.

I may just go back to a spinning reel and park the float reel.

What am I doing wrong? Anybody have any good links to this particular type of reel and how to use it.....correctly?

Won't even discuss the weighting I did and how the float just disappeared under the water...followed instructions, at least I thought I did...This is much harder than I thought...300 bucks for the rod and reel and I almost threw it away....lol.

Oh well, I'm goin for a wobbly pop....

Glad to see everyone else doin thier thing...I'll catch up....hopefully

if you get to frustrated ill take it off your hands. It took me some coaching from an older gentleman when i first got mine .The first time i took it out i wanted to do the same as you.there are many videos on utube but all i sugest is practice once u find the technique that suits you.you will never go back once u figure it out it takes patience. Hey Slingshot,
Don't get discouraged, float fishing is a very effective technique for catching trout in the rivers. When I started researching it. I found some videos online that showed various casting methods. I checked the source website and the videos are gone or at least I can't find them now. The four casting methods are as follows:

1) Wallis Cast
2) The Loop Cast
3) The Side Cast
4) Spinning Side Cast

Practice in your backyard or a quiet stretch of river, don't worry about other anglers. Everyone has to start somewhere. When I started river fishing it took me a while to catch my first steelhead. I still haven't fully taken up centerpinning but have researched the technique quite a bit, since floatfishers are the guys I tangle with on the river on a normal basis.
Cheers,
Jerry

I took mine to work and casted on my breaks with just the float....

Once you get it, you get it....

Still the odd birds nest when I forget the lock the drag and lay it down somewhere....

Dont give up, when you feel like tossing it. Lay it down and have a beer, then go at it again, LOL
