Just wanted to see if there are any bait makers in the LSO community? If so, would love to see some or your creations! I’m just starting to complete some, and the learning curve is steep!
Post up your bait pics, tips/hints/questions.
I’ll start it off...
Musky bait #1 10” She’s still blind... adding 👀 before next week. I’m far from being really good at this, and some guys out there really produce baits that are gallery worthy art. Gotta start somewhere I guess! Changing a 2x4 in to a fishing lure is quite rewarding, and fun... frustrating in equal amounts!

Very nice muskie lure.. Well done..
I tried to make some ski lures years ago but they never turned out too well..
I dont make any lures from scratch anymore, but I do have a drawer of odds and ends and broken lures, mostly spinnerbaits that I go through and re-fashion "new" lures.

So, I decided to do a bling bling lure... red glitter on top, white on the sides.
Knowing that doing glitter baits can be a mission, I tried to be thorough in being careful.
Last night I was seeing good progress after the 5th coat of clear, but it takes tons of shell to cover the glitter... and here is where the shortcuts happened.
I started to pile on super thin layers of clear with gaps of 20 minutes between each. It looked great... everything was doing well.
Went to bed excited to see the lure in the morning, but when I checked it my heart broke... BUBBLES!!! Like not just a few, but millions!
I though about just leaving it as is, but after the countless hours working on it, I just couldn’t let it go on looking like such a mess.
Busted out the sandpaper and softly started to scrape away the clear coat to see if I could save the below layers... no such luck.
Belt sander on, and the lure known as Michael Jackson to me, and Dorothy’s Slipper to my gf was no more.
Back to the drawing board! Here is a pic of the bait before I stripped it back to wood.

Lol sure! If I can streamline the process a bit. As of now I’d have to charge $300 a lure just to make minimum wage. Although I now fully understand why the custom musky lure makers charge over $100, and in some cases $200 , and $300+... and their baits are out of this world perfect.
It’s a b*tch to make them!!!
However, I am also working with tools that are not right, and some dating back to the 50’s. My bandsaw is less powerful than a sewing machine. The right tools would make a huge difference, as always! Lol

I've made my own lures for years. This I will tell you, it takes time between coats. get yourself an air brush, water base auto paint and a large cardboard box for a pain booth. Some coat hanger wire, cloths pegs, S hooks to hang lures on and a small lazy susan if can ( the type the you use to decorate cakes).

Jumbo crankbait on the end... the lip bait in the middle is what’s left of Dorothy’s Slipper... All are hanging to dry from sealer dips, except the darter... it’s pretty much good to go, but will be adding a bit more pattern and a couple more clears.

Okay, you guys got me. I had to try making my own lure. started this afternoon and put about 2 hrs into it. not sure if I'm actually going to use this as a lure, maybe just a really cool keychain. Or perhaps a very unique pull start for the old evinrude.

Nice shape to the body... I’m not artsy enough with carving wood to do that!
My goal is to have 10 baits to test for musky opener, knowing 50% won’t likely run. Lol
I have my top water to fall back on because they don’t have to run at trolling speeds.
