I hunted 5 days of controlled shotgun party hunting this year. I found, several rubs, three scrapes with licking branches, some big buck tracks, some doe and some doe and fawn tracks, found their trails, found their beds, but never found a single pile of turds, very weird. I sat, I dogged, I sniffed, I listened, I watched, I waited, I got excited at the milk weed flashes (more than once) but I never got a glimpse of the elusive white tail. Well that's not totally true, I got busted sneaking in the dark at 5am, a snort, a wheeze, and tail flashed before my eyes and with that it's gone into the darkness of morning. Every minute was amazing, enjoyable, peaceful, the fresh morning air, the sun rising over still surroundings, warm dry and just an amazing awakening to witness. I'll do it all again next year, and I'm already counting the days, I have harvested many deer in the past but this year was different, it seemed different and it felt different, it felt great to just be present. Our group saw 2 out of range does, one had her fawn with her, lots of turkeys, a wild active bee hive, and a lone coyote. Congratulations to all those successful harvesters enjoy your well deserved harvest.

Great post….sometimes we focus so hard on getting a deer we miss the other important stuff.

I couldn't agree more fishnhunt, been out 10 times and not seen anything, but was very nice to be in the bush. I have seen a great horned owl, a screech own, c### of the north, I watched a small hawk chase a squire right in front of me maybe 10ft out, squirrel made it to brush pile barely. All kinds of song birds. It certainly isn't a wasted day sitting there.
