Finally, the long awaited and rescheduled from May to September 24-26 weekend trip to French river with the group of fishing friends is in the books.
We were told before coming that fishing was slow but those trips are our regular get together to enjoy the friendship, the place, the food etc. and so catching fish for us there is just a nice bonus.
The 3.5 hour trip went fast and we have arrived at Totem Point Lodge in Wolesley bay on Friday for a two night stay.
We’ve been there first time and we were pleasantly impressed with the lodge: the property was well maintained, the cabins were nice and clean and well equipped with all amenities, and the docks were almost brand new and in excellent conditions.
The lodge was full of fishermen and we felt at home right from the start. My friend met a gentleman from Pennsylvania who was coming to the lodge for 33 years and just missed the last year due to the border closure.
In the morning, some folks were catching fish right from the docks. While I was preparing my boat, some guys caught a few walleyes and crappies right from under the docks which were located over pretty deep slope in 20- 30 FOW.
The weather was Ok on Friday and Saturday: still pretty warm, overcast with occasional light rain and light to moderate wind, but Sunday was sunny and great weather for flying a drone.
I was surprised to find out that water temperature was still very warm at 18C.
Over two days we tried various spots with some success, catching a bunch of pike (but most were small), some crappies and bass. We tried fishing for walleye but only caught one and everyone was complaining about the tough bite so we switched to fishing for crappies and pike instead.
Pike was biting in shallow weedy bays in 5-10 FOW and crappies were in deeper spots and caught mainly at around sunset.
Time flew by very fast as we were enjoying the magical northern scenery, the fishing, the lodge, the food and the good company of old friends.
Everyone had a good time and is looking forward to the next trip.
One of our friends made a nice video about the trip using some drone footage and some pictures taken during our stay.

Really nice pictures, and fish too. Sounds like you had a great time with friends and fishing. Was there fish at that rapids out flow, there should have been. It looked like deep water there. Just saw the fish in the pan, now I am hungry. Liked the video as well.

Thanks.
We tried fishing there for a bit but did not get anything. Its a good area for smaliies, for sure.
Overall, most people were fishing for smallies at the French around the rocky islands and rocky drop offs.
