Got out to a lake in Haliburton (thanks Nicholas for the tip), lines down by 8am. Perfect walking conditions, solid and flat with about 8” of ice. Set up on a ledge around 55’ with a deep basin nearby. Started off catching several juvenile cisco, the first two on a fly. A positive sign, the lake trout had to be close by.

Within the next hour, the lake trout had moved in. It was fascinating to watch them corral the schools of cisco on the sonar. Jigging just below the clouds of baitfish and drawing them high into the water column to trigger bites.

Suspended marks, close to bottom, some completely unmarked- the lake trout were clearly active. Vibrato, nedhead rigged with a soft plastic, tube jig, Swedish pimple and live emerald shiners on a dropshot. They were taking just about anything. Fished from 45’-68’.

In total, we landed 14 lake trout. Just one of those days where things click. My 2nd keeper:

Very cool to see the cisco in the trout. I always like opening up fish stomachs to see what they have been eating.
