Ice Fishing with kids, Help

Planning to be in the haliburton area this weekend with the kids. I usually take them to lake Simcoe for non stop perch. Hoping someone could point me to a lake in and around haliburton that produces a bunch of perch. Hopefully the kids won't get too bored and have me packing up early.

Most lakes have perch in them, I'm not sure about non stop action for them I've never targeted them. I would think jumbo perch would also be scarce. I would try Fish Online and find a lake that is near were ever you are staying, there are lots of smaller lakes that are stocked, that site will tell you what species are found in that body of water as well as stocking data. Hope that helps.

Head lake near the docks? Or is it all given over to the skating rinks?

Likely perch and other pan fish?

We passed on head lake, in hindsight maybe we should have. We came across mountain Lake and met a couple of guys that landed a few Lakers. We set up closer to shore. Skinny ice and open water. Not at all successful. Moved around a bit but only a few nibbles. Next day hit a lake near gooderham alot of water and snow on the ice made it hard to travel. Got skunked again. Kids were troopers despite not catching anything. Hope to head up again around family weekend. Thanks for the suggestions, I'd appreciate any others that people may have.

Looks like you don't mind travelling - thought you were interested just around Haliburton.

Barnum Lake has walleye and perch. And if you and your kids haven't seen it yet, the fish hatchery a coupl of hundred of meters further east on the north side. They usually have two or more types of trout being raised in tanks.

We've been to both the lake and the hatchery actually. The hatchery was interesting and the lake produced one walleye. I read elsewhere on the forum that Barnum lake wasn't great and that the eyes had worms. Conflicting comments about Barnum

I've never heard of worms in walleye in any of the area lakes - just the perch. Barnum and Kashagawigamog lakes perch have some worms . . .

My cottage is in Gooderham. So I don't mind a bit of a drive to get to a productive lake.
Has anyone fished Center lake recently? I think I read about it somewhere on this forum. That's the lake right off of 118 i think that has a round about you can park at. How deep is that little bay? My problem is a lack of a sled or atv. So a short hike is all I can manage with the kids

Are you asking about Centre lake just east of Dyno rd on 118?

I 'heard' of good ice fishing on Head lake for crappie. However, for the third winter in the area (occasionally) I've never seen any ice fishing on the lake. Suggest you try it - closer to your cottage and when bored your kids can skate for a bit.

When last there - the town was completing some sort of oval rink in the park.

Not sure the name of the rd but it's the one before you get to Cardiff. I think there are few Centre lakes in ontario. The mnr website says there are splake and brook trout as well as perch. I thought I'd give it a try. My fear is that the boat launch area may not hold many fish and all the good fishing would be in the northern part of the lake that I can't get too.
