What really makes me sick is the species stocking approach in the Great Lakes, especially in GB and partially in LO.
Look at the map here.
http://fsis.glfc.org/stocking/events/2022/
I heard a long time ago that MNRs from both sides of the border switched their stocking program from salmons to lake trout despite the big outcry from all interested parties (anglers associations, native communities).
I knew about it but when I looked at this actual date - it was really disturbing.
The argument that lake trout is native while salmons, with exception of atlantic, are not does not make any scenes to me.
Lake trout has slower growth rate, much more subjected to accumulation of all kinds of contaminants and less palatable for most people. So why?

This is the way our MNR mandate has gone. Native species priority and restoration of those species.

I do not agree with ignoring or lessoning the involvement in Pacific species but the native species program has had great effect on river restoration/protection which has been good for all species.

With the changes in our environment and the issues we face Pacific species have proven better adapted to what we have to offer now. It’s hard to reverse all the damage to the point Atlantics can be successful on a large scale. Lakers however have been successfully restored.

Not sure what the future holds but the more the MNR concentrates on native species the more they abuse the remaining Pacific Species. The Beaver fishery has been dry with nothing passing as a good example. Zero Steelhead going up during the peak run. YAY. 😤
My spring spot on the Beaver is shot now. In addition to the MNR not allowing Steelhead past Glen Dennan damn in the spring.

From what you say it is even more heartbreaking. I mostly fish GB and I’m just sick to my stomach reading this.

It sounds to me just like a big hype rather than prudent management.
I just don’t get it at all. Who and how will benefit from the fact that there will be, let’s say, 1 million of useless lake trout in GB instead of 1 million of salmons which could be enjoyed by many.
I really don’t get it.

Yay sadly the Beaver miss management continues and it’s getting worse.
I had a red to amazing private water for a decade or more. Then suddenly one spring it was close to barren. I found out they stopped letting Steelhead past Glen Dennan damn in any significant numbers and basically blocked them all fall.
I can’t comment why the entire fishway is bone dry but it recently was for days on end and may still be. Not even sure why.

Sorry, but are you talking about the Thornburry fish ladder being closed or further up the Beaver river. I was there about a month ago and NO water was flowing down the fish ladder. I thought that to be strange.

Do you mean here the fishway on the bridge between King St and Arthur St in Thornbury or the dumb near Clendenan Conservation Area?
It’s not clear from your post what it is and I’m not familiar with the area, never been there actually…

There is a Public Utilities Office located at 26 Bridge St, right beside the fishway.
You could contact them (519) 599-3241, they may have some info.
Sorry, I can’t really do that myself. My English speaking ability is not very good (I think I write quite well though incredibly slow but speak very poorly) plus I have impaired hearing and often not able to understand what people actually say.
So basically my communication abilities are limited to writing only, but why not bother MNR and other authorities with the issues which seem to be important for us?
