I have (and carry with me at all times while on kayak) a Standard Horizon HX890 VHF radio with some features you won't see on cheaper models:
* GPS
* NOAA Weather channels
* DSC calling
* FM radio (I can listen to music or news while fishing:-)
* Built-in scrambler system (eg, for one-to-one secure/secret communication)
* Waterproof and floats on water
* Water-activated emergency WHITE strobe light
* Made in JAPAN
IMHO this model is currently among the best hand-held VHF radio.
I have had mine for around 3 years now with zero issues. Previously I had its earlier model HX870 which is literally the same as this HX890 but sans FM radio receiver and voice scrambler system.
