2 HP Gas Powered Trolling Motor, Trolling Motor

Hello,

Has anyone ever attempted to add a gas powered trolling motor to their kayak instead of a battery operated unit?
I have a 2 hp Johnson that I'm contemplating a mod. to add instead of an electric.
Any advice would be awesome.

Well I would surmise that if you tried to mount it on the side, you would have a serious tilt, not a good idea. Trying to attach it to the rear might be a headache and then how do you start and control it without twisting yourself into a pretzel. I'd be tempted to sell the 2hp and get an electric, at least with the battery in the middle of the kayak, you're still wel balanced. Just a thought.

I have two buddies who has a kayak, and has a 2.5HP gas motor mounted at rear of the kayak just fine.

During the summer I sometimes see the same 2 guys on a big canoe. They portage, load their stuff, hook up 2hp gas-powered motor and fly away.

I've seen it on canoes, at least there you can sit right beside the motor or in front of it on a squareback.

Now it is your call if you can mount a gas motor on your kayak:-)

Where there is a will, there is a way!

If you buy a nucanoe frontier, they will support a 2hp gas outboard no problem!

having outboard on the back might be too awkward to operate (prime, start, steer) compared to electric.

one solution would be single outrigger like they do on canoes

Get a kayak that has a transom and you are in business.
Wavewalk S4 has a transom built in plus the location of the transom is very convenient.
You can fish and drive the engine easy.

I have one of this skiff/kayak and I uses it on Erie, Ontario and Gbay and all smaller lakes/rivers.

The maximum power you can throw at it is 6-8Hp.
I do have Minkota 80Lb, Tohatsu 3.5Hp and Yamaha 6Hp on it depending on what lake I go and how further I need to go.

wow. Pretty cool stuff. Its amazing what people are doing with kayaks nowadays. I think next year I will sell my Hobie Outback and look to get a much cheaper kayak and buy an i-touch trolling motor.
