Went from one end of Balsam to the other and skunked. The only thing that took a lure was these very small bass that hung onto a muskie bait. Weird!

Yes that is weird. My friend was in the boat on Sturgeon yesterday. My friend got skunked for walleye, and his friend got a walleye. Sorry the fish were not cooperating during the day for you. The night fishing was good again last night. Maybe the fish are just being lazy in the daylight hours. Going fishing is just like "tomorrow." You never know for sure what is going to happen.

I blame it on the wind, it’s been brutal all week.

Yes a lot of wind, even last night was breezy off and on. I am posting the details soon.

Glad to know you are fishing again. Enjoy.

Thanks RM I hope you are having some good fishing.

Thanks Jamie. Yes, not bad here in terms of quality. Did not fish almost entire August, mostly because spent vacations in another country. Fished a lake the second time on Friday which is supposed to have crappie. The first time was last year about the same time. Could only catch few SMBs last year. After few hours of nothing on Friday was about to call it a day and to give up on the lake, but then found little buggers. Released few smaller ones and kept 13 in 10-12" range.

Last night was cool with a SW breeze off and on. Lots of rock bass and a few large mouth bass, walleye, crappie and a very unexpected muskie. Fished last night from 6pm until around 4am. Too tired to see the sunrise again, went straight to bed. The fishing was about the same as Tuesday night, except for the muskie around 11:30pm. This fish looked like it had been through a tough life, with quite a few marks on it. Only 38 inches in length, I actually thought it was another monster walleye like last October. It was caught on my favourite old silver crank bait, that I washed with vinegar asap. Just kidding, I am starting to believe catching muskie on that lure is attracting more walleye and crappie to it. Had to replace the back hook this time, the front hook was replaced with the last muskie caught on it. Nothing scarier than releasing a muskie in the dark, with artificial light and shadows every time you move your headlamp. Got slightly nicked on my left thumb by my hook or a muskie tooth. If this lure ever gets lost, I may as well retire from fishing.

One of the many small rock bass, same lure caught the muskie.

Did you see the size of that rock bass. It was almost as big as the muskie mouth. Maybe 2 or 3 pounds at least. LOL.

That is good size crappie to keep. Like you I let the small ones go by the hundreds to get bigger for years to come. I find it hard to believe you would ever give up. Good luck comes to those who put in the time on the water. Good job.

You may need to use that crankbait on a dedicated rod with like 90lb line and fresh steel leader for every outing.

You are right. You have fished with me before. St. Croix rod, Power Pro Super Slick line, black wire leader. Old, faded, beat up, silver crank bait, never changes ever. And a black swivel on all my jigs.

Thank you "J" sorry it was not a great fishing tale. Nothing much happened Tuesday or Wednesday night. Just the fish and myself. No beavers, no marten or mink. No bear or raccoons or skunks. Not even a fox or coyote. It was very quiet, except for two loons singing. It was so quiet you could hear the fish breaking the surface of the water. And pitch black with no moon, just the stars for night lights. Quite a few falling stars streaking across the sky as well. Nothing better than peace and quiet sometimes.

My son and I just got back from 2 days on Balsam.
Rather disappointing results for 2 days + the first evening - 2 medium size pike, one 2 3/4 Lb bass, and a few other small bass and a lot of dinky perch.
The only walleye were three 4-5 inchers…the smallest walleye we’ve ever caught! And we fished the supposed hot spots that were recommended in the northern half of the lake. Did a lot of worm fishing because nothing was interested in any of the lures or plastics in my 3 tray bags of tackle.
My son had the most luck on a tiny silver Mepps spinner, including the 2 pike.
Marked lots of bigger fish on the sonar, but couldn’t get them to bite on anything!
