My son and I just got back from 2 days on Balsam.
Rather disappointing results for 2 days + the first evening - 2 medium size pike, one 2 3/4 Lb bass, and a few other small bass and a lot of dinky perch.
The only walleye were three 4-5 inchers…the smallest walleye we’ve ever caught! And we fished the supposed hot spots that were recommended in the northern half of the lake. Did a lot of worm fishing because nothing was interested in any of the lures or plastics in my 3 tray bags of tackle.
My son had the most luck on a tiny silver Mepps spinner, including the 2 pike.
Marked lots of bigger fish on the sonar, but couldn’t get them to bite on anything!

I am sorry my advice did not help. I am shocked you could not find the walleye hungry and aggressive, beside the small islands. Not sure why the bigger fish you saw on your sonar would not come up for your baits. I feel bad now for not being able to be more specific. This is the first time my advice has failed someone. Not once but twice. Two days and no hungry walleye close to where you were staying and out to the islands. I do apologize, I hope you enjoyed the time with your son.

I think it was the result of the cold front that went through prior to our arrival, and the shifting winds - south Tuesday eve, north Wednesday, back to south Thursday. The other guest at our cabins had no luck either any day, and other boats I saw fishing the areas we were in weren’t boating any fish either on any of the days. It was still a nice getaway.

Certainly not on you CM.
I went back down the north side of Grand Island from Rosedale to Coby.
Then all around ant Island and down through West Bay and nothing.

Thanks man, I just enjoy hearing about all you guys out on the water. It's too bad your fishing was the same. Hopefully everyone will be lucky next time out.

Glad to see you are back in the saddle again CM. Myself and 2 buddies went up to Balsam Wednesday evening. We fished from 7pm to 10pm and did well. 2 walleye. 18” and 18.5” and about 8 smallmouth 1.5 to 3 lbs. went back out Thursday morning and was a south wind to start and fishing was terrible. My one friend ended up with a couple largemouth. We fished 4 hours. Then headed north for our 16th annual guys fishing weekend which was a success until the cold front brought everything to a grinding halt

Thank you Arnie. It was a lucky couple of nights. Best part was having some peace and quiet, on the water. Staring at a computer screen for three months was way out of my comfort zone. Sitting in a chair has only one purpose for me. Watching the leafs or a good movie.

Thanks flexkk, that's good fishing on you guys. I was hoping to fish Wednesday night as well, but reality set in. Be back up there in a bit. Hopefully the fall fishing is kind to everyone.

All I see on the weather for the next 14 days looks like summer. Some wind direction changes, but so far no high winds. My friends have been calling me because the fishing has been good this week. I see no reason for the fish to drastically change their early fall feeding frenzy, in the next 14 days. It's a bold prediction, but get out there and enjoy some fishing. It's a big bonus to have this very warm weather, for a prolonged period. Bass should be easy to catch, but the walleye and crappie will be hiding in the weeds. They will still be hungry, but you will have to lure them out to hit your baits. Good luck everybody. Stay safe.

Thank you sir. Desperately trying to hit up the big moon that's on the way. I missed it in June, July, and August. Can't miss another if at all possible. A full moon, with a slight breeze on the lake. Nothing like black water with silver streaks on the waves. I swear the fish follow the reflection of the moon, as it travels throughout the night.

Based a lot on info from the boards, and you specifically Crappeeman, we tried our luck on Sturgeon this past Saturday. Been once before and did ok on Bass, but couldn't get them to come out and play Saturday afternoon. Once the sun dropped behind the trees the 'eyes came out and we did alright with 7 'eyes landed by the time we called it an evening.

Seven walleye, that's great fishing. I have had some good reports from friends since the last week of August. My two night trip up there two weeks ago went well, with some lucky catches. This trip up yesterday night and Sunday night just turned weird. Going to post the details on a new thread. I hope you enjoyed your walleye dinner.
