My son is showing more and more interest in fishing rivers.

Last minute on Sunday, we decided to go spend the afternoon fishing for the last few decent salmon remaining. We walked a lot of river and saw a lot of spawning fish, which my son enjoyed immensely. After walking and checking quite a few areas, we did see a few good condition fish still sitting in holes and not on redds.
While teaching my son to fish for salmon, I am also trying to teach him the best ethics possible. Stay away from spawning fish. Clean up after yourself and even others messes left behind.
He is a bit small to handle a large float rod so I have him using a 9’ micro lite with a spinning reel.
He managed to get 3 Chinook and a 1.5lb Steelhead. I was more excited he got a Steelhead but he loved the salmon more. I guess I have more to teach him.

You are so lucky, sharing time like that with your son. Oh, nice fish too.

Nice fish! So I guess you have wrecked him for panfishing with that kind of fish?

Perfect outing with your son.
It sounds like your son will be a 'chip off the old block', so to speak.

I walked the 116 mile creek going through Glen Abbey golf course the other day, and, while there are still salmon swimming up the river, there was quite a number of fish belly-up.
Sad to see, but that's in nature's playbook.

Cheers,

Actually that’s the funny part. At the end of the day he asked me to go sucker fishing next spring. He loves sucker fishing.

Sounds like a great day of fishing made even better by having your son with you. Special times for sure. Good read

That's good. It sounds like a real fisherman with interest in different kinds of fishing. I use to fish for suckers as a kid and then more red horses than suckers later in life (and really anything that swims often just to figure out how to catch them and also to see what they looked like). I am always interested in another way of fishing or fishing for species that most people ignore.
