As to best area, my experience early season has been out of Port Bolster. They get early ice there and perching is normally quite good. Have always used Paul's Huts and been happy with service and usually on fish with him. Has website under "Ice Hut Rentals" above. As to whities and lakers with the perch I haven't heard of that happening much. Others would have better info on that.

You could probably grab a few perch when Laker fishing, but normally you are quite a bit shallower. If you want a good day target a species. HEY go more than once...
I always tell people going out in the bottom of Cook Bay is an experience in itself on a weekend when there are a few hundred people out there.
Laker fishing is GREAT when it is on, and fun when normal. When it is off it can be cold and windy.....
