People use both but I think you'll be better off with downhills as they are wider, gives you a larger bearing area.

Just finished putting together a sled and used downhill skis. Cross country skis have a middle grip section to aid in forward motion. Down hill skies give you a wider footprint for more float while having no grip section.

Definitely downhill skiis but if all you have are x country skiis and cannot find some downhill skiis cheap, then just use the cross country skiis.

Had both and definitely downhill are much better. Try using a spacer 4 - 6 in. between the skis and box. That will make it easier to pull in soft snow.

smitty sleds are awesome.. I made mine with a 6 inch clearance but with the snow we got this past weekend it was still shallow. If I were to do it again I think I would make it with pvc tubes that I could raise in case I needed more clearance. Maybe use a pin and hole system like high school volleyball poles. ( I hope that makes sense) I kept it simple and it works very well but like everything, it can always be improved!

I also used downhill skis and them seem to work very well and not hard to steer.

I put a set of downhill skiis on a double set of 2X4 under my clam to give it some clearance off the snow. It is way easier to pull then the clam alone on my first 2 outings which had some snow but not a large amount of snow. I will see how it works this weekend with all this snow presently on the ice. Might need to modify it to give it additional clearance so it doesn't push/plow snow which is what make the clam so hard to pull on its own. It fun to experiment with it.

It seems the downhill skis are the ones of choice being they are wider and ride on top better. Just thinking out loud here guys but anyone ever thought about trying water skis?

I made one two years ago , used wooden cross country no grip on the bottom. Made uprights at back with handle across to push ,great on bare ice

With the powder snow we have now I think a toboggan would work better than any sled, but if it's a sled, the wider the better.
