The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) could discontinue the stocking of chinook salmon in much of Lake Huron, according to biologists who spoke at a meeting held in Oscoda on Aug. 9.

The plan would end stocking of the DNR-raised fish except to the Swan River and Nunn’s Creek, according to Todd Grischke, acting DNR Lake Huron basin coordinator.
He said the rivers must continue to be stocked due to Native American treaty obligations, also to maintain a waterway where eggs can be obtained for future stocking.

Chinook stock to Lake Huron would be reduced by more than 600,000 fingerlings if the plan is implemented.

That is unfortunate, Canadian stocking has sucked for years. Now this will really put a damper on fishing
