At a lake up north recently and used my trolling motor 95% of the time I was there. Coming back to the dock I dropped my motor and the water went from 9 FOW to 1 foot with rock bottom underneath. Sure enough I dinged it! I know I dinged my prop ( I am due for a new one anyways).

After inspecting the lower part of the motor I know a peice of the skeg chipped away. I am wondering if this missing piece if even worth getting fixed.

Whats your opinion on the pics?

Thanks

Call Dundas Marine . Forward this picture to them . They can give you a rough estimate on what it will cost to rebuild or replace new lower end . Hope this helps ..

I dont think skeg guard even makes one for the motor size. This motor is a mercury 25hp 4 stroke efi . I think the skeg guards start off at 40 hp.

Wonder if i could fine one for the 25 hp ?? hmm

I just have a small piece of missing at the back. I dont think it will make a big difference. Just dont want to spend tons of $$ for something that might not make a big difference or mess with the internal gears.

I have owned 2 boats with skegs that had damage and never had ill effects because of it. One of the the motors had the skeg entirely gone (not by me). Before I sold it I put a skeg guard on to make it look better and noticed no difference in handling or performance with or without it. Now if you were running a 250 HP It might be different

As long as the remains of the present skeg are lower that the tip of the prop, I wouldn't get tooo excited. It will provide a bit of protection when you go and grind some more Canadian shield. Maybe a fall project.

x2

I would ride the motor and see if you notice a difference.

At that horse I doubt the skeg is really doing much, but take it for a ride, at slow speeds i bet you hardly notice any difference.

Save yer ca$h

Thanks for the replies. About to head out shortly for some bass fishing !

Talked to a reasonably knowledgeable boat guy i ran into at a marine shop the other day. He was a customer there too. He said it shouldnt make a difference at because the piece is small.

if it was at the front of the skeg it may have but being at the back it doesnt make a difference.

Ended up buying a new prop too. Same pitch but went up in diameter.... becasue thats the only size they had that would fit my motor.

Old one was 9.5x11p ...... New one is 10 3/8x 11p.

Wonder what going up in diameter but staying at the same pitch will do ??? Probably nothing to be honest. hah !
