Sorry guys but another newb boater question. I have quite a bit of play laterally in my prop on a 50 merc. It is not the replaceable sleeve style. How much is normal? This is not play back and forth sliding on the spline but you can actually"wiggle" the prop on the spline.

I would pull the prop off and do some serious investigation.
That is not right. It should be evident with the shaft and bushings off.
Just my opinion.

Ok. So this is a 2009 merc 50 2 stroke I bought used. I took the prop to Simcoe Prop Repair here in Georgina. It turns out the internal sleeve was shot and could be pressed out and replaced. The shop identified the prop as being an after market cheapie that the previous owner used to try to get more speed out of the boat. (Just buy the right motor for the job right) Anyways, they recommended an OEM slightly smaller, less pitch prob and the boat actually tops out faster and has better hole shot than before. The moral is buyer beware when buy used. The previous owner might be a boob.

Much thanks to the pros at Simcoe Prop Repair.

Yep definatly your best bet. Another idea would be take the prop off and see if you can find a thrust washer that is the same diameter as the inside ring of the prop, this may eliminate the play that you see. Does the prop rattle too?

Or just pop that sucker up in the classifieds and use that $ towards a yamaha

A Yamaha is a good choice, but don't give up on the Merc, they make good anchors.
