i water cured some eggs and wanted to know if this roe must be frozen now so it keeps. love the rubbery feel to water cured eggs first time i tried this method works real well.

I always water cure mine at site of catch, then put enough row in freezer bags to make 3-4 dozen bags - then freeze it. Take out what I need night before fishing and roll bags to what colour or size I need them that day. NOTE: Saugeen is changing colour and the salmon are starting running.

thank you i find it hard to believe you were the only other angler that water cures his eggs either that or no one else is willing to reply to a fellow anglers questions.This is the first time i have water curred my eggs and im only looking for some needed advice.Normally i borax cure mine but i wanted to try the river water cure this time.I would like to thank you for your reply.

Your going to have to freeze those eggs asap or they're going to spoil fast. I just finished doing up a batch of salmon eggs this afternoon. I did some in store bought cure and air hardened some as well. I usually don't cure my eggs though just clean them of excess blood and freeze them. One thing for sure is that you have to cure/borax them to keep them good in the fridge for a longer periods of time.

i cure mine with kitchen salt
spread the roe after you cleaned them from debra on towel and coat the roe with kitchen salt
leave in refdigeretor overnight and in morning rinse them in colander under cold water than put them in babe food bottles and they stay good in refrigerator for at least ayear or more

I water cure mine also. found that after 15 -20 minutes in the river they are either good to fish right away or store. I like to freeze mine right away in a glass jar. They keep for the next spring no problem and if you don't use then all right away I put them in Pro-Cure after a day or so. I have some that I cured this spring still good in the fridge a little bit of juice off them though.

For extended storage 1-3 years, I borax in water cure mine then store in film cannisters don't fill to the top about 3/4 then light a wooden match drop it in the top and close the cover (burns up all the oxygen) seal top of cannister with electrical tape and freeze.

I have also used the river water cure for my roe. Separate them into jars and store them in river water. They freeze well for up to three years. Once I am ready to go fishing, I thaw a batch, and tie up spawn sacs. Have to use up the whole batch, since re-freezing destroys the eggs. They get soft and fragile.

I use a product called Flash cure from the US for some 8 years now.

In my opinion it is simple the best for 2 reasons.

1. you jus take your eggs and semi dry them.bag them and add the cure until they are completed coated...then put in fridge.period. Just check after 2 or 3 days to make sure ther is no liquid.if so add some more.

I have some BT roe in the fridge now for more than 3 years and it's as good as ever.

I have tried every method out there and this one is a no brainer. Also contains scent enhancers.

I would have replied earlier, but i don't often check these threads way down here...

I get the eggs out of the fish right away and rinse them in a ziplock bag river side. Then when I get home, I have a strainer I made using 2x2's for a frame and a piece of window screen stapled to it... I give them a good rinse with the hose as cold as I can get it... then leave them in the fridge over night on paper towels on a tray as thin a layer as i can get them... after that I give them a quick squeeze test, if they are good in the freezer they go!

Thats for loose eggs... for skien I usually just use Pro Cure.

used the water curred eggs the other day. Found they turned white after a few drifts. Not to impressed by this.I then noticed a bag that i had removed earlier had changed back to original color. it wasnt that eggs were milked out but that they had gotten to cold in river .I took a white egg and rolled it in my fingers and as it warmed up it returned to its original color. is there an answer to this do the eggs in the river from spawned fish turn white when the water is so cold? any info would be great
