Anyone know which lakes in the kawartha's region hold whitefish. Can tyou catch them in the spring/summer. I smoke steelhead every fall but buy smoked whitefish at a local market. Whitefish may be the best tasting smoked fish ever.

How are they caught I have no experience.

Thanks

I just wanted to include that you should take that site with a grain of salt except for what has been listed as stocked in the lakes. I have seen numerous species listed for lakes i fish that i have never heard of being in those lakes (i.e. Rainbow trout in simcoe) while the most prolific species in a lake won't be listed.

There are rainbows in Simcoe. Not many hooked though.

I agree with Bob. They were planted in some numbers in certain tribs between 1918 and 1942. To this day, an occasional one is caught in the open lake during the summer while targeting lakers. Specs are native to the upper reaches of some of the tribs but catches in the open lake are even rarer.

Well i'll be. You learn something new every day! I assume they are far more rare than simcoe walleye correct?

I've been led to believe (but not proven by me) that some of the lakes that hold lakers also have white fish. I think that there were some postings last winter about white fish on Kawartha Lakes?

Myself - I'll be looking again on Kashagawigamog. The lake also has Herring - which I'd posted on last year (I was shore fishing walleye and a dip net dropped in front of me - I thought that they were fishing illegally . . .)

A lot of the lakes may have many species - not well listed because not a sport (target) fish or in very low numbers . . .

Another indication of white fish in the Kawartha Lakes is when the bait stores sell spreaders . . .

I have no hard data, only anecdotal evidence, but that is probably true.

Stoney lake has a whitefish population. The record whitefish came from there. Check out the deepest spot in the lake or the dams in the spring at Burleigh or youngs point. Try Mepps number 3 spinners.

Out here it is important to dip / spray baits / lures for rainbows as they are finicky. Garlic flavour really works well. Are scents popular there for rainbows?

Hey artie18, the world record was caught in Clear Lake, which is really one body of water with Stoney. Still I agree their are some deep holes down there to check out. Would the season be open for them there, in the winter? I've caught them up at Perry's Creek, and Burleigh Falls. I used small Williams Wabblers size 10, silver. Fun on a rod, and reel. That was usually in November, but I haven't witnessed a fall run in years.

The record was caught by a 17 year old boy in front of the sailing club on clear lake. I was in the boat beside him. I think it weighed around 17 pounds. I think stoney is closed during the winter. There are rumours that there were lakers in stoney but I have never caught one in 35 years of fishing clear and stoney. You really have to work the lakes to find and fish them. Good luck to you. Artie.....
