Ok, maybe i put a bit too much innuendo i. The topic, but bluenote and i have been going back and forth on this a bit, and walleye37 has chimed in with some interesting comments so we thought it might make an interesting topic in its own right. Assuming a standard jig in the hook up position i.e. O__)
When using a standard twister tail do you place the tail up like the hook, down opposite the hook, or at a 90' angle to the hook and why? If you use a double twister tail, are they inline with the hook direction or 90'
The oddest i have seen is my brother inlaw. He hooks it through the body twice angled to the jig like it was an earth worm being hooked for sunfish. He still catches fish with it so who am i to say anything about it...

This question yesterday surprised me - I'm not too sure 'how' I put the grubs on the hooks - sometimes I'm lucky to get a straight run - not twisted. Elrik - your question is great!!!
I've been using the trigger-x 3.5" walleye grubs - mostly for all my fishing in past three years. If grub is grabbed by fish and slips on hook I remove and reposition it (re thread?) And re use grub. Sometimes I can use same grub all day!
For me - everything is with the tail! !! If tail not moving when reeling in then grub is waste. If fish has removed the smallest amount - replace.
When reeling in - I'm fast compared to others. With the trigger-x grub it's the vibration that does the first attraction to the fish. Tail angle doesn't really matter . . .
Once the grub is on the hook and pulled though the water the orientation doesn't matter much as the tail stretches and performs same in all orientations - at least from my view. I retrieve fast . . .
Side hooking plastics is becoming popular..........
In fishing people have set standards......... Books, magazines, seminars offer all sorts of choices. For me personally I feel that if every person just jigs up and down in that little ice whole, what makes it so attractive so a fish bites? Think about this. All doing the same thing??? What can I do differently???
Who says that I can't use bass lures out in the ocean? Who laughs when I use salt lures for pike? It may go against the standard, but who cares??? I used to drill holes in some pike spoons. I tested them in a pool. Bubbles were streaming through the holes? More vibration that the fish are not accustomed to making them curious to bite. They did work, at times.
I continue to read a lot of great suggestions on these blogs. Trial and error is OK and should be encouraged. Work what is best for you, BUT always be open minded to continuous change. Make a decision to try and learn something new every time you get on the water.
As far as I am concerned there are no rules in fishing.....

LOL you guys kill me
For what it's worth I hook my twister tails -- tail same side as hook. Always have. Yes it gets tangled sometimes, but I believe it imparts more action when vertical jigging. Maybe it doesn't make a difference. I will experiment next outing.

I put it up like the tail as this is what I was taught was proper. But as others have said feel free to experiment. I did all summer long. I even wacky rigged salamander shaped plastics and had success so who knows what's right or wrong! I mean we need something to discuss while we wait for ice, right?
