QUOTE (ICEDOG @ Jan 04, 2015 - 06:17 pm)
Great lookin cart/sled you have there tater!!
Here is a pic of the one I built…not sure how the small wheels will work

That's an intersting concept. Wheels just slide on i'm assuming but won't they easily slide off if one of them gets stuck or stops freezes up and stops spinning?

This wheel system is a new thought of mine (haven't tried it yet). They easily slide on and off…the front wheels swivel for cornering and can not slide off (hitting the sled leg). The rear ones will slide off when the sled is pulled forward…still figuring out how to attach them, I'm thinking fence gate latches, cheap and easy to operate with gloves on. The wheels will only be used on dry pavement if there is any snow or slush on the road I wouldn't need them. When I reach the lake I could possibly hide them or throw them in my tote with my gear… they are fairly light. Most days I will not need them but good to have when roads are dry.

Very nice hardicer! I like the magnet idea…do you have a wheel system for dry pavement? Sometimes I have to walk a good distance on pavement to get to the lake....hard on the skies with all the weight in the sled.

Wow…some great engineering here. The flip over on the sled would be great when your on the move. I walk/drill and test fish holes until I come to a good area then set up my fat fish 949 (10'x10') as a base. When the fish slow down I venture out in circles sometimes kms away knowing I have a place to go back to warm up is great! I don't have a machine and I'm going to attempt lake trout fishing this year for the first time…I have a feeling I'll be walking a lot farther than what I'm used too perch fishing.

This link is a really good resource! Pages and pages of pictures and ideas! And is it the original Smitty who is replying to many of the posts?

Great ideas guys! I like the swing away wheels, but the ones that slide on the skis are a neat idea as well. A little tip for the "engineers" is using the small pneumatic tires size 4.10/3.50-4. You can purchase them at TSC on sale for 6.98 each.

Got my skis and materials to build a smitty this week end my question to those who have built one already is how high do you put the legs for clearance? I don't want to go to high and have it tippy but don't want to catch drifts either, any advice?

I have 12" ground clearance on my sled works great in deep powder drifts and not tippy at all. Have fun building!

I also used 2x6's for the leg hight and it seemed to pull real nice last winter .Remember to keep them light and simple .Use pressure treated wood and galvanized screws so it wont rot or rust out on you.
