Hi jrtall. I assume your question about the net relates to Pic 007. When I first saw that pic I wondered why the net as well; it's too big for the hole! That said, I can't recall that they were ever common on the ice. Even back in the day, a gaff seemed to be the weapon of choice.

Thanks for that, every little bit helps. Given what little I know about that picture that certainly is possible. Please ask her to take a guess at the date for the pic as well. Thanks.

I apologize Gord, I guess I should have read ahead further in the conversations, about vintage pic 018, before throwing in my two cents. On the other hand at least I was right!

It's all good snets, no problem. Glad you found the board, there's a fine group of people here with lots of good info. I notice you were on the Island last weekend, hope you found all to be in order. I hope to get over soon.

The second from the left looks like Lorne Sommers and 1st one on left was his friend but his name avoids my memory for now. Lorne my dad had this same pic. Fished lake simcoe when I was in diapers 46 years ago and my dad fished it from his teens. This photo would have been from 1935 to 1945 when I get a chance ill look it up .. Mom had a habit of writing a story on the back of every photo

The one with the two by four stringer so to speak . Believe it or not I threw that thing out no to long ago. Didn't have a clue why it smelt so bad .. Can remember the bussual baskets full of salted minnows smelling just like it haha. Dad had a spear also but it was used more as a long gaff then spear. The spreader made for a nasty landing if you were not carefull and if you got a hook in the wrong end of the meat they wouldn't come up the hole so the ten foot stick helped out. Ill get some of the picks scanned and put up next time I'm up to Barrie were we stored them. Mostly from shanty bay when the name was made that.. Hundreds of huts all off the second and third.

Found this picture recently. I think it is 1957 or 1958, when we put a hut out a Big Cedar. On the left is Tom Clarke who was a friend of my father's. Lost track of him many years ago and don't know if he is still around. On the right is SDC at age 15 or 16. Gad did I look young. In the middle is a typical catch of whitefish and herring.
