You need to buy yourself a Smart rod. It works with the iphone wake-up app.

I don't know about whities bite but I can tell you about lakers. Some years ago one day I was jigging spoon 30/40 off the bottom for lakers on Simcoe. I fell asleep while holding the rod in my hand hand. During my sleep I heard engine noise of a snow mobile coming from far and would get closer and closer until it passed by my portable in a high speed and I was about opening my eyes but "EXACTLY" at the same time I suddenly felt a super heavy drag on my line and the rod almost fell of my hands. Opened my eyes fast. I was in state of shock & confusion , grabbed the rod and was thinking what had happened ???!!!

It might sound insane but at first I thought some how and for an unknown reason my lure in the water got stuck in the snowmobile, which just had passed by and was being pulled away by the snowmobile also mean while was wondering how it could have been possible

Then came back up to myself and had a good fight with a laker. Yes I pulled up a fairly big laker.

So my recommendation is that if you want to have a nap hold up the rod for lakers but don't be shocked when it bites and drag the line.
