I may try for a fish this weekend. The conditions are pretty good but the snow came this past week. About a foot in places of snow.

I may miss the chaos this year. Below minus 30 doesn't sound fun. I think I will let everyone beat some trails down this weekend for me to use later! I'll prob get a day off thru the week and head up with no crowds. But good luck to all the brave souls going up Sunday. Stay warm and safe.

Regards, ff.

Why do they open the fishing up so late in the season on this lake?

I understand that it is supposed to protect the fish population. Some locals believe it is to save more fish for the ultra wealthy cottagers that only come up in the summer. Personally I think it increases fishing pressure during the compressed season and works against their aims regardless of the actual reason for the late opener.

Funny, when the mortality rate of cold water species dramatically increases when they are caught in the summer months.

I heard because there is so much more current in this lake and the ice tends to be less safe on this lake compared to others is why it's later. Every opener there is still slush on it and it's not as thick of ice as say rosseau or Muskoka. For whatever reason that it is I'm glad, as it gives a fresh opportunity during the February blahs the other lakes typically have.

Regards, ff.

Current isn't the reason. Lake Joe has almost zero incoming flow and is mostly spring fed. The ice is always as thick or thicker than Lake Rosseau. I was born, raised and still live within sight of Lake Joe. The late opening is not due to poor ice conditions. Fishing pressure in the winter is likely 10 times more than the summer and I assume that is the reason. The bonus of the late opening is a fantastic fishery. Enjoy tomorrow. I know I will.

The late season is because of the fishing pressure it gets being right next to the highway. Like said, I think its a great place for the Feb blahs. The temps overnight and tomorrow morning must be a record low for the opener. I hope it doesn't affect the bite too much
