I'll hopefully stop by for a quick fish on the way to the cottage on the 18th. Anyone able to PM a decent access point as where i usually go the one guy always yell at me and apparently blocks the usual access with a fence. (was told by a local he is not allowed but does it anyways) dont trust him, seems a bit sketchy

Just got off the ice. Caught a few small ones for the pan. Too cold to stay any longer. Ice is good. 16 inches plus. There is a ton of snow in big drifts with some deep slush in spots. TOUGH going out there. Foots Bay or Appian Way are two easiest public access points.

I am a cottager on Lake Joe and believe me, the season is not shorter to save more fish for the rich and famous cottagers. They don't even know that the lake has a fish population in it. The don't even know how to hold a fishing rod. On any given day,I can count the lake trout trollers on one hand.
Years ago,I was in constant contact with the MNR biologist as they knew that I fished the lake every weekend possible. We used to be able to get out on January 1st to fish all the time . The month of January the trout we very aggressive and would hit anything the moved and at all levels in the water column( even just below the ice. They kept asking me when the bite tapered off and our findings were mid February. They kept a tab on that time frame for a few years and then decided to use February 15 as the new opening day for the season. They are not trying to protect the fishery for the rich people. They are just trying to protect one of the last remaining naturally reproducing lakes in Ontario.
45 years ago ,you would see 2- to 30 ice fisherman on the whole lake. These days you see thousands on weekends. That does not do a lake any favours. The MNR is not out there to screw the fisherman( as you may think) but they just want to protect the fish population.
