Just wondering if anyone knows the ice conditions on some of the smaller lakes up haliburton or bancroft way?

Thanks, Will

Bancroft area ice.

Report courtesy of Hiddencove Cottages / Rick (aka Whitey) & Sandra

Well, our ice is a little behind as well...probably only a couple of inches right now, and we got about 6 inches of snow last night. right now though it is -12 and it calls for colder tonight so we are for sure making ice. I have our first ice fishing group on Jan 14 so we should be good by then. Once Rick gets out on the lake to walk it and spud some holes we will do a report on the board. We should be ahead of Simcoe for fishable ice, and once it is good to go we will let you know for sure...hopefully we do get some board members up, that would be great!

If you have 6 inches of new dry snow on top of other snow, I'm guestimating an R value of R-10 and at those temps, I'm thinking not a whole lot of ice is being made. That's the unfortunate kick of nature, I'd rather have a clean -10 than a snow covered -20.

Ill be headin up to a friends cottage for new years anyways, so Ill bring my gear and hopefully get to head out. The lake they are on is tiny, deep, but tiny, so hopefully it was one of the first to freeze. Ill let you know how i make out when i get back.

Thanks, Will

Ice was pretty inconsistent, found anywhere from about 7" to 2" so I did not venture out to the deeper water in search of lakers, as I was with a friend who is a little larger than myself and he did not have a floater suit. Ended up with only two small largemouth one caught in 24 FOW one in 30 FOW. never caught one through the ice before, and though for sure after I moved deeper I wouldnt catch another. Later found out that there was some current where we were finding the thinner Ice due to a spring, so maybe we would have been safe to head further out.
