This isn't going to help the walleye in Scugog! Pan fish is still open in Scugog and there will be some that will still keep the walleye they catch.
I once seen an Asian gentleman with 34 crappie on the ice, the CO approached him and told him he was over his limit and to stop fishing and the gentleman said one more as he pulls up another and tosses it on the ice. I loved his reaction when he got handed his fine and escorted off the lake. How many times does this go on and there are no CO's around?

Yup, just had the same link emailed to me. Too close to the city putting way too much pressure on the lake, sad part about it is they say closing down the walleye fishing still may not help bring back the population. Lot's of musky in Scugog which I am sure is part of the problem, they gotta eat.

The closure may help but there are other factors in the walleye decline. As of now Lake Scugog is a terrible place for walleye to live, it's a swamp with a max depth of 10 fow or something like that.

i have a cottage on rice lake and see people catching fish and toss them in the bucket size and species doesn't matter. i don't know how many pontoon boats i have witnessed with 8+ people in the boat all keeping 20"+ walleye. if it continues going on like this rice lake will be the next fishery to be closed in several years.

Those that say the closure won't help the lake, it makes zero sence. Hundreds huts on the lake, a lot target walleye. Just before they spawn too, keep one female and that's taking out hundreds of eggs that could be the future of the lake. With less than 1000 walleye left in lake, why the h*ll would you even want it open. I couldn't be happier about this closure!

This is a sad day, this is the reality of today and anglers not obaying or understanding the rules and regs. We need to figure out a way to clearly get the message out, conservation is the only way in this day and age we can all continue to enjoy our local fishing hole. Do we need to post more signs up all over the lake and put the amount of the fines as well, like the speeding signs posted on the roads on the way to the lake? Appoint a certain amount of co,s to a lake to patrol it 24/7? Or rely on volenteers to patrol and take shifts? To what point do we figure out a solution to this problem before it leads to more closers on the other kawartha lakes? Anyway just interested in other thoughts opinions on the matter as I have fished the lakes for 10 + years and have been dissapointed to see what has gone on with the management and inforcement of these lakes over the years.

If enforcement is the issue then more laws won't help. I say stop paying people to count fish and do studies and start paying people to enforce laws and make money.

Sounds like some huge continuing concerns with the future. Some interesting suggestions.
With such a huge amount of outdoor folks on this site, how many regularly attend the meetings over these concerns / topics? I assume there are meetings?? It would be a great time to listen to their plans, sound off your thoughts, concerns, debate them before you read their decisions in the papers or on the internet.

As someone who fishes the lake regularly I have mixed feelings about this. I'm 100% in favour of this but it has to be the first step of many. This isn't field of dreams scenario with "if you build it he will come". There has to be more done to bring the population back. The lake its self is favourable for walleye. I dunno.... Bring a barge out to dig some holes. Create some drops off or underwater structures of some sort of breedIng grounds. The lake is way to shallow and weedy. Time will only tell but more has to be done to succeed.

Well said.
I read a lot about people pointing fingers and blame certain groups of people. Only makes me laugh as how stupid they are and that those same people are the reason why there are problems. It is because they have no clue what the true reason and root cause. Easy to point and blame... Question is what have you done to help?

A sad day in Ontario for us sportsmen, Scugog closed and declining numbers of all other fish and game. The MNRs solution is to lower bag limits or close seasons due to pressure from non-sports groups. Oh, another thing, why did polluted Hamilton harbor get 50,000 wallete fry this summer, it could have gone a long way to restoring walleye in the Kawarthas.

Im ok with this as long as this law is actually enforced! And why the heck can't we just stock a few thousand in to get the recovery going!? For those who say the lake is too shallow i agree it is mostly shallow but if you drive from port perry up to the tip of the island and stay in the channel all the way the average depth is 15 feet which is deep enough
