attached to the skis? . Yes the bolts from the cross pieces go into holes but I have also made counter sink holes that the nuts on the bottom of the bolts rest into. I am going to find some small copper pipe to insert as sleeves for the bolts to easily drop into.
Now I'm a bit puzzled. Do you have a T nut or similar at the bottom of the holes?

As far as drilling holes in the ski tips, there are many ways to skin that proverbial cat. For e.g. you could drill 2 fairly small dia holes in each tip, then run a loop of strong but small dia rope(or even string) thru it----then attach your tow rope to the loops.

Hey Harold
No T nut. Just a countersink hole at the top of the bolt holes. for the nuts on the bottom of the carriage bolts on the cross pieces. I also decided to take the advice of others and removed the eye bolts from the ski tips. I found some strong rope that fit through the original bolt holes I drilled. I just added fender washers between the ski tips and the knots to help spread the load across the tips when pulling.
I am quite pleased with the how it turned out, can't wait to try it out.

So the 2x4 isn't actually bolted to the bottom then correct? The bolt just slides into the hole and the bungee will hold it on?

That's actually a much better idea than trying to bolt them together, thanks for posting!
I was thinking of an L bracket on the bottom of the 2x4 and attach it using a carriage bolt and wing nut.

Hey Craig, How wide is it?
The pieces you attached to the skis....what size wood did you use and how did you attach to the skis?
Last...what is the height of the pieces you attached to,the skis?

Cheers
Greg

Hey Harold,
Exactly, the holes are just to receive the bolts and to keep the cross pieces in place. The bungies hold the sled down on the cross pieces. I also used an epoxy between the wood and the skis and loc-tite on all the hardware.

Hey Greg,

I used 2x8 for the height but have seen others use 2x6 and 2x10. They are attached to the skis with epoxy and three 3 1/2" wood screws countersunk from the bottom of the skis. I was contemplating making the width 36" wide but after putting the sled on top I decided 30" was plenty. If I had used 2x10 I would have made it wider for better stability but 30" seemed fine for the 2x8.

Craig,

As I see it, attaching the bolts to the crossbars makes them harder to lose but you could possibly just have drilled straight holes just a bit bigger than the bolts and not put any nuts on. Comments?
thx

I did just that Harold, still had to put nuts an the bottom of the carriage bolts to keep them in place. I just counter sunk the top of the receiving hole for the bolts so the nut would sit down in it. I could have also counter sunk the nuts into the bottom of the cross piece.

How was drilling through the skis? Any special precautions or they just drill easy?

Easy drilling but was hard to countersink with a countersink bit because the ski bottom is plastic. I used a 3/8" drill bit then beveled the edge with the countersink bit.
