Has anyone made one of these out of 1/2 as opposed to 5/8 plywood? Just wondering if it would make much difference weight and stability wise. I'm a walker and don't have a machine to pull it out. Tired of getting out there and it's too darn windy to set up the pop-up by myself. I saw a guy last year set one of these up in the wind by himself easily. I'm going to start it tomorrow considering it's going to rain.

I can't see why thicker would be better if you're pulling it on foot. I keep meaning to build one but never have gotten around to it. Now my fishing buddy bought a flip hut, so . . . I feel like it will still be a while before I get around to it. Love the simplicity of the design though.

I used to build a few of them from 5/8" and sell them when I was on the farm in Pt. Perry. I used to use 2x2"s to frame and strengthen the underfloor and put in 1" foam insulation in between the 2x2's. Lighter to pull if you stay with 8' full floor sheet and even lighter if cutting down to a 6' floor.

We used to have a fold up hut like that one and it was pretty easy to move around especially when on the smitty.
I finally found a flip over single man now that fits in the trunk of my Honda Civic but If I had a larger vehicle however, Id definitely put one of these together again.

I built one 20 years ago buddy and I dragged it out on to the ice, thought we better burn it on the ice rather than have to drag that heavy sob back to shore I think I sold it or gave it away might be ok with a snow machine but I didn't have good skis on it just 2x6 runner good luck get flip over hut

Thanks for the replies and input guys. Princess has heavy duty tarps on sale 25% off so I think I'll head over and grab one in the morning. I don't think it'll be too much heavier than what I'm pulling now and I'll build it like a smitty and keep the skis waxed after every use. If it turns out to be too much to pull I'll sell it. I'll post pictures of the process. Cheers

i have a shappell bayrunner it weighs 62lbs same as single man flipover, has a sliding seat and an electronics self. go on their website and you can see it. i sold my 2 man flip as soon as i saw this one, your feet or gear never on the ice, and you can move it fully set up. 1 cross member comes out and she folds right down.just my 2 cents.

I was checking out the bayrunner 2 but there aren't any available around. None of the stores have them and shipping from the US is crazy. A couple of guys i met at CTC Keswick last week had one of these homemade shantys and I've been thinking about it ever since. They had it setup faster than I can setup my pop-up lol.

My advice is to make it with removable skis (smitty style). If you dont add the height for pulling you will kill yourself plowing through the snow. It will still be light enough to tip and remove the skis or put them on as a one man show. Also a black tarp will help with heat and block more light.
lessons I learned from my build that I eventually sold.
