Never taken an atv on the ice. Should I be worried about getting stuck often. My machine is great on the trails but if I get struck there are normally trees around. I could drill a hole in the ice and have a piece of wood to drop into the hole, or use a couple ice anchors to attach my cable to. What do you use. I will have a cordless drill with me.

Usually get stuck because the snow is too deep and you bottom out,,wheels are just spinning. Carry a shovel and you can usually dig yourself out. I tow a big sled behind mine with one or two guys riding on it so that adds a lot of drag, but the passengers get to do the digging and pushing,LOL.

Get a 2 foot piece of 1/2" rebar, get out your torch, heat it up where you want to make the bends and make a nice wide hook with a 5-6" bend. Do the same at the other end to loop your cable or recovery strap/rope.

You should definitely consider a set of chains on the rear wheels! On glare ice chains are awesome. I also recommend a bar or piece of 2x4 for an anchor to winch yourself out of a bed of slush.

As previously posted, if you spend enough time on the ice, sooner or later you end up stuck. Number one tool is a shovel, preferably of good quality in case you are stuck in some slush. A recovery strap, and if you have a winch, a short piece of 2x4 works good for an anchor.I usually have at least two in case I lose one under the ice.
And of course, when it gets sketchy, don't be shy with the throttle. It sometimes saves some work/fishing time! I run deep lug Sedona Rip Saw XC tires with Kold Kutter traction screws all around on my Can-Am. Real nice on bare or wet ice or when you need to dig down a little to the ice.

Actually I cant wait to get stuck on the ice.
Cheers All,come on ice!!
How are those studs on pavement? i tend to put between 2-10km on the roads before I hit ice.
I ran chains last year and they were nothing but trouble for me with the links breaking.
put zillas on this year but im concerned about the glare ice - chains were a godsend there.

If I struggle with getting stuck often, i do have an old enticer, guess I will tune it up in case I need it. Just keep it around for the grandkids but have left the maintenance to my son so it doesn't get used much. My ATV is newer and I keep it well maintained so would prefer to rely on it. Walking really ain't my thing

I generally trailer to the lake,so not much road riding..the traction screws I run are carbon steel..not recommended for off ice use. There are times when it's necessary to run the shoulder for a bit before getting to the lake and they've been fine so far..They do offer carbide tipped screw in studs, but they aren't cheap..As for on ice use, they would be sweet on some zillas. I run 50 or so per tire with one full season of hard use.. no issues so far.
