Merry Christmas everyone,
I would normally be inquiring about ice fishing lakes about this time of year but!!!
So I thought because my in-laws live in Niagara falls and I will be up there for Christmas I could scratch the itch and try for some rainbows or Brown's on the Niagara river.
Does anyone here fish from shore this time of year and if so where would there be access, also any tips would be welcome.
I will be there for 5 days from the 25th I'll pay an update with my success and or failure lol

The whirlpool has been good to great the last few days, that would be your best bet, but it's a bit of hike, going down is the easy part hahaha. It is a pretty nice hike and area to fish once you get down. Queenston is another good area but the trout fishing has been slow to stopped so far, maybe by Christmas that area will pick up, the water is to warm at the moment so the Rainbow are blowing through Queenston and heading straight up river. The Queenston area is nice since you can drive right to the spot, but it's more of a winter area because the Rainbows hold there when the water temps drop.Keep an eye on the water clarity, dirty water sucks no matter where you fish, emerald green 5'-6' is ideal, high SW winds dirty Lake Erie and the river, but it clears up pretty fast in a day or 2.

for a first fish on the mighty, you want to head to the Whirlpool for sure.
Park across from the whirlpool golf course there is a parking lot there. Follow the path down. As mentioned, going down is the easy part. You will know what we mean when it is time to go home.
Its a great river and spot to fish. You're going to want to size up your gear compared to small-med river systems.
A 10-20 lb float is average. I fish a 20 just so I can add more weight and bomb my casts out further, but a lot of guys run 11g 15g 16g etc. All up to you, but a 4-6 gram float isn't going to give you the best chances!
Good luck, mess around with presentations and let us know how you do!

I was able to get out for most of the day today......unfortunately I didn't I couldn't land the only fish I got to bite... I still had a great time out there and met a couple people who offered me some great tips for my future attempts.
What an unreal setting to be fishing and I can't wait to be able to land one in that atmosphere

Anybody on this thread know where I can find information on shore fishing spots along the Niagara? I may head down there on Sunday, and with a knee as rough as mine the Whirlpool is out of the question. Tight lines!

Not sure if youd be able to get to the river without a bit of a hike. Port Dalhousie has very easy access. You literally just pull up to the water. Look up port dalhousie boat launch for directions.

I would suggest Queenston boat launch for you then as a start point.
Easy to get a spot, altho crowded sometimes.
Right now river is muddied up, so a bit of a challenge to get fish.
As mentioned, the more often you go the better you will get on the river

There was one tread on here that had one guy explain a couple spots very good where you can start walking the shoreline of the river. I just don't know which one it was. I'm not a 100% on this but I know you can hit shoreline right from the queenston boat launch but not sure if you can walk up or down river from there. Iv always gone to the whirlpool.

There are some other spots where you can do this. I am not going to mention those tho for one particular reason.
if you wind up in a location on your own and new to the river trouble may be just around the corner as the Hydro dams open and close trhought the day and the wate level can go up or down 2-4 feet.....seen too many guys out on rocks when this happens and tehey were unaware of this.
Very easy to get sucked in at "wrong " time.
Start slow , start easy, and work your way up with some first hand knowledge and experience gained.

You can fish the Niagara Glen area but it is basically a more treacherous walk then the whirlpool it's a longer walk less steep but longer and to fish the pools you have to climb a few boulders, also you can reach peably beech from the glen but it is also a long hike and you have a bit of rock beach to fish from. Basically if you have a bad knee Queenston is the only place to fish that I can think of, I have a few areas down river but I would never post them on the internet, there already ######ed from the internet but they are not easy to get to and it is a hike and you need waders and most newbees don't like to wade the Niagara, that's a local thingy hahahhaha.
Like Shank says Queenston is your best bet, it is a good area lots of fish caught there and if the water is dirty, try Port Dalhousie in St Catharines, thats my grounds and I got 2 steelies today both about 4-5 lbs one chromie and one male with the sweetest colours I've seen all year. water is perfect both fish came off streamers.
