Hello all I was thinking about getting out on the ice this weekend. I'm just curious roughly how far I would need to drive to find a lake with hard water. I'm not asking for any specifics just a general areas so I have an idea of how far north to look. I put all my ice fishing gear away but I feel an urge to take it out for one last adventure before its retired until next season.

If you do decide to head out, stay away from rivermouths , creeks and even steep hills beside a lake. We got a lot rain last week ( Thursday I think) and may of frozen over this week with cold temps, but could be very thin in those areas.
I was out 2 weeks ago on a small haliburton lake and found 10-12 inches of ice still. Didn't catch anything but was a beauty of a day with the sunshine.
I may try and venture out again this weekend as my final ice fishing trip.

Time to call is a season. Soon, very soon, the bass and walleye bite on the soft water will make up for the lost few (dangerous) days on the ice. Time to focus on soft-water fishing - the countdown is on.

I probably wont be out on ice again until next winter hits us. I'm sure theirs lots of ice to be had if your willing to drive or live in northern Ontario. It's just not in the cards, soft water season is among us in southern Ontario. I will get my jollies out soon enough. Thank you everyone for the help and advice, it was all very valuable in making my decision.
