I'm heading up to the Muskoka area this week for some early spring lake trout fishing. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on catching them this time of year as I have never gone out this early in the season. Thanks in advance!

Open water flat lining in a boat 1.4mph to 1.8mph williams wobbler #60 silver is my go to lure. I find the lake i fish i start trolling over 25 feet of water and then each pass try 5 feet deeper and so on working my way out to the deepest water over 70 feet.Look for minnows surfacing and you will find the lakers !!!!!!.

Great topic. I am headed to Muskoka in a few weeks time as well and have only caught one laker down rigging in early June. I know a little how to get them through the ice but softwater i am clueless. Thanks for the tip Sparky! Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Slow trolling Rapala baits. I usually try all depths - don't be afraid to troll shallow (12 feet) early and late in the day. Lakers will roam near the surface at all depths of the lake for a week or 2 after ice out. Make sure you have a really long line out, or planer boards, Lakers can be boat shy early in the year.
Braided line and long rods help hooking % on the long line
Favorites for bigger fish: Rapala Super Shad in Silver, or Gold - nice slow wobble with a big profile - Lakers are looking for a big meal in spring.
Rapala J13 in silver/chart or silver orange.
Try shifting to neutral a lot, the bait slowing and wobbling up to the surface seems to trigger followers. I've had them hit as the bait breaks the surface.

I am heading up this weekend to Muskoka with the boat first fish after ice out.... I start trolling Rapala, livetargets and spoons in bays at 20 -25 feet and same work outward and if no luck ...weathers always wonky...put the riggers down at 25 -30 ft with spoons...Williams are my go to bUT not a wobbler...good luck out there ... water is high keep wakes on boats far from shore and away from boathouses fish on
