This is a pic of it opened up. I have built a lot of stuff over the years, with the aim of making things strong and light. This sled is built with 1x2 supports along the sides and walls and across top to add as a frame against which the lid can rest on. Very strong and very light. When walking out, lightness is key. I have had two adults and my son sitting on this and no probs at all.

Here is a pic of my son sitting on top. You can see the brackets I made for rods can also hold my finder. As mentioned previously, drink holders also can fit in there so coffee/pop hot chocoate etc can be stored out of the way but easily in reach and off the ice. I also built the same type bracket on each end, so I can deadstick a rod off the end while jigging in front.

And here we have a pic of me and my son heading home after a trip. My 6 man pop up is ratchet strapped to the top. Everything else fits inside - heater, extra clothes, food, stove, drinks, auger etc etc. I sometimes just strap the auger on top of my hub though, as its the first thing you need when you get there. It pulls like a dream being so light and has worked really well to hold everything, and get on and off the ice easily with nothing falling off.

Will be changing over the smitty supports to 2 x 6 and painting it white when (if!) I get the chance before perchin this winter. Bring on the ice!

Moonman.

This is one I made last year and it worked pretty good. It also breaks down for easy packing in the truck.

Thx for the pix and description, MM. I see in 1 pic what looks to be sections of ABS pipe. Is that what you mean by cup/rod holders?

Great job moonman! That sled looks awesome! Gave me a couple good ideas for my own sled build.

Those are sections of central vac tubing. Lightest mayerisl and cheapest material. They carry rigged rods for transport. A approx half inch slit is cut halfway down so the reel handle can slide in and then the butt of the rod slides into the tube but no further than where the slit stops.

On the front of the sled I made yellow wood brackets that a rod holder can slide into as seen in other pics. I rigged an 'arm' on my finder so I can slide it in one of these brackets as well to get it up off ice, also a conventional drink holder can slide into the brackets as well, then I can put a cup into the drink holder....there is one bracket added to each end of the unit as well (between the vac tubing in that end, just in the middle on the other end). So I can move things around as needed.
