This weekend I decided I was going to try my luck with the mighty Lakers. Been fishing my whole life and never targeted lake trout - i'm more of a Walleye / Perch guy through the ice. Sorry let me rephrase that, I WAS more of a Walleye / Perch guy...

Spank me sideways! Am I ever hooked on Lakers now.

Started off the day picking up my buddy in the Northern Kawartha's on Saturday around 6am and headed to his Lake X about 2 hours away. It was a gorgeous day, sun rise was perfect up over the water in this bay we were fishing, wind was kind of raspy in the morning however you can beat the scenery.

Huts set up by 8ish am, put the flasher in the hole, and we start chatting, catching up, drinking coffee etc. about 15min in I see a mark peak up from the bottom. I look at my buddy and say "I got a *expletive* fishing coming up" and within 10 seconds BAM!!! I get crushed and my rod starts doing the wave over and over with head shakes and drag peels. We were in 60-65 FOW and the fish would come to about 10 FOW (no visibility) and then peel right back to the bottom... 3 TIMES IN A ROW! I was yelling at my buddy to please clear the hole, help me adjust my drag, and pray for me. I wasn't going to lose this fish aha With all the adrenaline pumping we both blanked on which way to tighten my dam drag and after the 2nd run I accidentally almost loosened it all the way and almost crapped my pants.

Luckily after calming down, and remembering the basics of ice fishing we finally got this beautiful fish through the ice. I know its nothing huge, as compared to Simcoe Lakers, but this was one of the best fights / most memorable ice fish i've ever gotten. So at about 8:40am it was celebration time. My friend and I decided to celebrate we were going to dive into the adult pops earlier than normal! For the rest of the day we missed a couple, a couple broke off and we got a couple pan fish however who cares because it was worth it for the 1 Laker.

We fished right until sundown and I guess we got a little too excited in our celebrations because by the end of the day our pop box was empty and we needed to call a cab to come get us at my car

Will definitely be back out on lakers this weekend, without a doubt.

Baits used were mostly Rippin' Raps (which I got the laker on) and Vibratos. The Raps were on fire - nothing else really seemed to work.

Tight lines! and if anyone EVER needs a fishing partner please let me know. I'm like a kid in a candy store after this weekend

Also fish was safely released after a few photos and victory laps around the hut!

Great report and congrats on your first laker. I’m sure there will be many more to come....and an even better call at the end of the day to call a cab.

I'm not sure what general area you were fishing in, but some of us find that minnows are best for small(ish) Muskoka lakers.
