I like whitefish fried or smoked but never has a success doing any BBQ with it. I tried doing it like a planked salmon once and didn't like the result. Anybody has had any luck with it on a Barbie?

I have one of the flat grills that sit on top of the regular BBQ grills.
I BBQ lots of fish on.
Brush with a bit of oil and BBQ the flesh side of the fish fillet first, then flip and cook on the skin side. This keeps the moisture in the fish.
When done, season to taste and even brush with a bit of maple syrup if you like.

Zombie thread i know but ive been trying this method recently and it is great. Fish doesnt stick, you can get it as crispy as you want without drying it out, and still gets that bbq smoke. Worked well for rainbows, lakers and whitefish.

It is a zombie thread;). I totally missed the last 2 replies and they look very valuable . Are these flat grill tops have little cutoffs or this is just a solid flat surface. I looked up in crappie tire and a cast iron flat top is way too expensive ($167), I see a couple of stainless steel ones for about $20 -$30 like Vermont Castings BBQ Basket Grill Topper. Will this work?

I actually do this with all fish at any given time.....fillet fish....cut fillet diagonally half way through....put fish on foil wrap......slather the fillet with butter.....make a bruschetta mix......wrap it up.....then double wrap it.....put on the Barbie for 12 to 15 minutes at a medium heat.....make some toast.....unwrap the fish on a plate leaving foil cupped and enjoy the fish while dipping your dry toast in the melted butter....forking the fish and bruschetta mix.
